Nicole, 32, is a social worker who suffers from compassion fatigue. One of the most effective people in her profession, she connects with children and is a wonderful therapist because she cares so much about them. But it is because she cares so much that she has decided to give up this work. Her case load is much larger than recommended, but because of budgetary concerns, there is little she can do about this. She is stressed and anxious, worried about the children she sees, and her inability to protect many of them. Counseling might help her develop some self-care skills, and if she decides to leave the profession, assist her with career exploration. Nicole needs help forgiving herself, and dealing with the guilt she carries for wanting to move on. Because she is bound by confidentiality, she can not talk with family or friends about her work.
